A Little Something About
The Tir Na Greine School of Irish Dance evolved due to an overwhelming demand in the Irish Communities throughout the state of Florida. The school was opened 1994 by Laura O'Sullivan and Maureen Armstrong in Orlando, followed by locations in Ocala, West Palm Beach, Melbourne Jupiter, Stuart and Del Ray Beach. The name Tir Na Greine (Pronounced 'tear' 'na' -'gran-ya') is Gaelic for "Land of Sunshine", an appropriate name for an Irish Dance School in Florida-the Sunshine State.
The two former students of the Donny Golden School of Irish Dance in New York, share a common bond that went beyond the fact that they were former classmates. Laura and Maureen are Regional and National Champions, and have all danced with honors at the World Championships in Ireland. They also have to their credit performances in such places Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York as well as performances with such well known Irish groups as "The Chieftains", 'Cherish the Ladies" and "Paddy Noonan". Maureen and Laura are accredited by An Coimisium le Rince Gaelacha In Ireland and the Dance Teachers Association of North America as both adjudicators and teachers.
Tir Na Greine continues to grow, with over 25O students. The school had students participate in the 2008 World Championship that were held this year inWaterfront Theatre Hall in Belfast Ireland and had students who participated in the North American Irish Dance Championships held this year at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville Tennessee.. Tir Na Greine hosts a Feis annually, the South Florida Feis held on Hutchinson Island, Florida in April and are planning for the feis in 2009.
